Waterski & Wakeboard Scotland is the Governing Body for water-skiing and wakeboarding in Scotland both cable and boat driven. It promotes participation in the sport by both men and women at every age and level of ability. We are currently in the last phase of our 4-year Grass roots to Gold strategic plan 2016-2020 which has seen a steady growth within our delivery sites and a healthy increase in our participation numbers nationwide. We are now seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to fill the role of Development Officer for Scotland who will help us develop our next 4-year plan, deliver this nationwide and build on the current growth.

Job Description

Job Title: Development Officer

Waterski & Wakeboard Scotland (WWS) are seeking a Development Officer to work with us on the implementation of our current strategy and the development and subsequent implementation of our future strategy. This permanent role will primarily revolve around developing participation in our sport through partnership working at local and national level as well as developing and implementing key initiatives.

General

  • Reporting to: Board of Directors and line managed by Chief Operating Officer
  • Location: This is a national and field-based role which involves travel across Scotland, also with a working base from WWS HQ, National Training Site, Town Loch, Townhill, Dunfermline.
  • Salary etc: Circa £23,000 dependent upon skills and experience, 28 days holiday per annum (statutory days and bank holidays included). Contributory pension scheme pending.
  • Hours of work:5 hours / week Monday to Friday including some weekend / evenings as required.
  • Other: Hold a current full Driving Licence, have access to a motor vehicle and willing to engage in our sport which involves driving boats and getting wet. A PVG disclosure is required for this role.

About WWS

WWS is affiliated to the UK governing body British Waterski & Wakeboard and through this body to our European and World partners. We work closely with sportscotland from whom we receive funding for this post. We are coming to the end of our current strategic plan which presents a unique opportunity for a forward-looking motivated person to building on our current successes with our grass roots programs and help develop our sport to its next stage. Through this role we aim to improve accessibility to our sport by extending the number of available sites across Scotland and by converting existing participants into members.

A positive coaching culture underpins our high level of service delivery and is believed to be vital to the continuing success of our sport which is why expanding our existing network of UKCC coaches, Cable Operators and Drivers through our existing education programme is a key objective for our sport’s governing body and this role. 

Main purpose of the Role

The Development Officer will play an integral role in the successful delivery on a wide range of programmes and directly contribute to the outcomes in our strategic plan. The role will be focussed around club development, ski/wake school development, working with partners to identify new cable tow sites and the creation and implementation of initiatives that aim to increase participation in grass roots waterski /wakeboard.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Work in partnership with existing affiliated clubs and ski/wake schools to deliver ‘taster session’ events utilising our ‘Cutting Edge’ programme that aim to encourage new people to try our sport.
  2. Support clubs with the development and implementation of their own development plans.
  3. Work in partnership with local agencies to deliver ‘Cutting Edge’ programme.
  4. Build relationships within Higher and Further Education institutions to deliver our sport to the student population.
  5. Work with other WWS staff and directors to increase and develop the coaching workforce in Scotland
  6. Provide progress reports where required, plus recommendations for future improvement upon request.
  7. Act as a conduit between the clubs and the governing body, for development issues ensuring the best interests of the clubs are communicated.
  8. Identify and share best practice from within and out-with WWS.

General responsibilities include:

  • Support the development of WWS performance structures, as and when is necessary
  • Other duties related to the post of Development Officer as may be delegated.
  • Contribute as appropriate to the website, social media channels and other publications.

Key Targets:

  • Meet agreed targets related to the key responsibilities for the role as listed above and as agreed with the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Ensure compliance within our terms of investment with sportscotland.
  • Promote and assist with the organisation’s ongoing achievement of equality standards.
  • Promote and assist with the achievement of safeguarding standards.
  • Survey, reporting and analysis of statistical information e.g. participation trends, ‘cutting edge’ programme impact and general membership numbers on an on-going basis.

Desired Candidate Specification

The role would suit an individual striving to develop and enhance their skills and knowledge working in sports development environment.

The successful candidate will share our passion and vision for developing waterski & wakeboarding in Scotland. The candidate must demonstrate that they can meet the following specifications:

  1. Ability to take ownership of the role and demonstrate initiative and a desire to succeed in both waterski and wakeboarding disciplines.
  2. Strong communication and influencing skills – enabling effective interactions with individuals or teams and a diverse network of external partners.
  3. An interest and a desire to participate in our water sports – leading by example.
  4. An understanding of the positive impact that sport can have and sports development processes.
  5. Understanding of the sporting landscape e.g. Active Schools programme, local authority sports development, sports funding and other partner agencies.
  6. A basic understanding of how a Sports Governing Body operates.
  7. Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and database management
  8. An appreciation of the intrinsic links between sport, funding and business.
  9. An HNC/HND in a sports related subject would be desirable.
  10. No formal waterski/wakeboard qualification are required for this post, full UKCC level 1/2 and SBD boat driving qualifications will be provided for the successful candidate
